"Gareth Thomas" biopic to be set in Ireland

Fri 17 Apr 2015 In: International News View at Wayback

A planned Mickey Rourke biopic about Gareth Thomas will now be set in Ireland, and won’t be about Gareth Thomas - apparently due to concerns American audiences don’t know much about Wales. The movie will now be called Irish Thunder and the lead character Rourke will play will be called Mick 'The Blade' Collins, rather than Gareth Thomas. An insider has told The Sun that’s because: “Nobody in America really understands rugby and there are fears they wouldn’t know much about Wales either. “The film is very much inspired by Gareth’s story, but a lot has been changed and the action has been moved to Ireland.” Thomas is said to be upset to be cut out, but hopes the film still raises awareness about how hard it is for gay sportsmen to come out.
