Hillary Clinton’s video announcement that she is running for US President features a gay couple who are planning to marry. The couple is Jared Milrad and Nathan Johnson, Human Rights Campaign members who are planning a summer wedding. She’s also picked openly-gay man Robby Mook to be her campaign manager, making him the first openly-gay manager of a major US political campaign. Clinton says in her announcement video that everyday Americans need a champion. “And I want to be that champion. So you can do more than just get by, you can get ahead and stay ahead. Because when families are strong, America is strong. So I'm hitting the road to earn your vote. Because it's your time, and I hope you'll join us on this journey.” The former Secretary of State and First Lady previously sought the Democratic nomination in 2008, but lost to Barack Obama. Clinton first announced her support for marriage equality in 2013, and has stood up for lgbt rights on the world stage. In 2011 she told a United Nations summit in Geneva on LGBT rights that “in reality gay people are born into and belong to every society in the world”. She added, “Whether we know it, whether we acknowledge it, they are our family, our friends and our neighbours. Being gay is not a western invention, it is a human reality.”
