Down with shellfish: new campaign

Thu 9 Apr 2015 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

A Californian man is opposing a “kill the gays” ballot in his state with a tongue in cheek call for shellfish to be banned. Joe Decker from San Jose has filed the "Shellfish Suppression Act", in reference to a verse in Leviticus which says “whatever has no fins nor scales in the waters” is an “abomination”. The petition reads “Shellfish are a monstrous evil that Almighty God, giver of freedom and liberty, commands us in Leviticus to suppress. They also smell bad.” Decker suggests anyone who willingly consumes or sells shellfish should be guilty of a felony, and fined $666,000 per occurrence, and/or imprisoned up to six years, six months, and six days. It follows a Christian Californian lawyer’s widely-panned "Sodomite Suppression Act", which calls for gay people to “be put to death by bullets to the head or any other convenient method”. The initiative is unlikely to make it very far. Meanwhile there are growing calls for him to be disbarred. Other responses to his petition include the “Intolerant Jackass Act”, which says anyone who suggests killing lgbti people should have to undergo sensitivity training and make a $5,000 donation to a pro-gay group.
