A Californian lawyer has put forward a ballot measure called the 'Sodomite Suppression Act', in which he asks for it to be legal to execute gay men and lesbians by 'bullets to the head,' or 'any other convenient method.' Orange County lawyer Matthew Gregory McLaughlin's bill states “Seeing that it is better that offenders should die rather than that all of us should be killed by God's just wrath against us for the folly of tolerating wickedness in our midst, the People of California wisely command, in the fear of God, that any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method.” The executive director for the Sacramento LGBT Community Center Donald Bentz has told ABC News it’s “terrifying and almost laughable in the same breath”. However Bentz is also worried it could actually come before voters. More than 300,000 petition signatures would be needed before it was placed on any ballot. However experts say it would clearly breach the US Constitution anyway and would never become law. A group of lawmakers have filed a complaint against the lawyer and the state bar has been asked to review his membership. Thousands of people have signed a petition asking the bar association to disbar him.
