Mon 23 Mar 2015 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Welsh police are investigating a homophobic tweet sent to referee Nigel Owens after a Six Nations match. “Your a gay **** awful performance against france tonight, how did england top Wales?” the person sent Owens. The Welsh rugby ref responded: Welsh police are now investigating, saying they have had a number of complaints from the public. “The Tweet concerned has now been removed from the page. The investigation is at an early stage.” Fans have previously been banned from stadiums for two years for shouting homophobic abuse at Owens. Gay slur allegations at Super Rugby clash Lgbti rights championing Australian rugby player David Pocock has complained of homophobic slurs during his Brumbies side’s match with the Waratahs this weekend. Pocock approached referee Craig Joubert twice in the final 15 minutes of the game to complain about the comments from the opposition, who are accused of calling Brumbies players ‘faggots’. "You heard that sir ... you can't say that, there could be gay players out there,” Pocock told the ref. Pocock, a former Wallabies captain, says despite what some players might claim, it’s not “just rugby” or “just banter”. "As players, we've said the Brumbies aren't going to tolerate any homophobic slurs, I just made that clear to the referee that it's unacceptable. You can be the toughest man in the world, but it's got nothing to do with using that sort of language," Pocock says. "We've just got to take a stand as players and move forward." The claims are being investigated further by the Brumbies.
