Actor Alan Cumming will visit New Zealand for the Auckland Writers Festival in May. He will take part in a discussion hosted by Michael Hurst at the ASB Theatre on Friday 15 May. He will also appear at the NZ Listener's Gala Night on Thursday 14 May, and Family Life on 16 May. The actor known for roles ranging from The Good Wife to X Men, and work in theatre, recently published a memoir Not My Father’s Son. Cumming identifies as bisexual and has been outspoken on lgbti right and HIV awareness. He currently lives in Manhattan with his husband Grant Shaffer. Tickets for his Auckland Writers Festival event are on sale here Another Auckland Writers Festival guest this year is Carol Ann Duffy, who was the first openly-gay person to be a UK Poet Laureate. She is one of the most influential poets of modern times, who writes for children and adults, champions language and teaches English at Manchester University. She will speak with John Campbell about her life in letters and reads from her work on Sunday 17 May. Tickets here On Saturday 17 May queer transman and comic artist Sam Orchard will take part in A Graphics Affair. He draws an autobio webcomic called Rooster Tails, and has recently published the first three issues of Family Portraits – a collection of short comics about different queer and trans New Zealanders. Tickets here Other events of interest include a performance piece based on Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway, gay author Witi Ihimaera joining Cumming ando others in Family Life and Alison Mau refereeing a panel about sport called The Games We Play.
