InsideOUT is hosting a national hui to once again bring young people of diverse sexes, sexualities and genders from all over the country together. The rebranded group, which was formerly QSA Network Aotearoa, is following on from the PatchwerQ Hui in 2013 and Hui Putahi in 2012. “Shift is an opportunity to strengthen our connections across the country, celebrate our identities and the diversity within our community, and work together on how we can go back to our schools and communities and make them safer and more inclusive spaces,” says Tabby Besley, InsideOUT’s National Coordinator. “We want to see a shift in the dominant culture and see Aotearoa be a safe place for everyone, regardless of their sex, sexuality or gender.” The hui will take place at Tapu Te Ranga Marae in Island Bay, Wellington from 16-19 April, in the school holidays. Young people aged 13-22 years old are encouraged to attend, and there are plenty of opportunities for those older than that to volunteer. “We are committed to trying to make it possible for every young person who wants to attend to come along, regardless of financial barriers,” Besley says. “Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you want to come but don’t know quite how that can happen – or if you can help out by sponsoring a young person’s travel costs.” The hui has been made possible with support from the Ministry of Youth Development and the Queer/Trans Youth Grants from Ara Taiohi.
