Shaun Robinson The New Zealand AIDS Foundation says HIV prevention is “everybody’s responsibility”. An Auckland man has been charged over the infection of another man with HIV. The man, in his 40s, is facing one count of causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard and another of committing a criminal nuisance by doing an unlawful act. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison. According to law a person is deemed to have taken reasonable action to protect others from HIV if they wear a condom. "Stigma about HIV makes it hard for people to tell others they have HIV for fear of being rejected of treated badly. The responsibility for safe sex/condom use in any sexual relationship rests with both parties,” says New Zealand AIDS Foundation Executive Director Shaun Robinson. "It is everyone’s responsibility to prevent the spread of STIs whether they be chlamydia, gonorrhoea HIV or anything else. We will never prevent the spread of HIV or any other STI by trying to identify those who have it and putting all the responsibility or blame on them for stopping infections."
