Trans woman takes on bathroom ban

Wed 11 Mar 2015 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

A Canadian trans woman is taking pictures of herself in men’s bathrooms to highlight how “completely ridiculous” a proposed law amendment banning trans people from using facilities matching their gender identity is. Brae Carnes, 23, says the amendment to a bill to add gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act could place trans people in danger. The Canadian Senate is being asked to exempt 'sex-specific' facilities from the law by Senator Don Plett, who claims letting transgender women use female bathrooms “allows for pedophiles to take advantage of legislation that we have in place”. Carnes has told the Times Colonist that with her photo campaign she is actively showing them “what it would look like if that became law and how completely ridiculous it is. It’s just not right”. She says it’s uncomfortable for everyone in the men’s bathroom, including herself, when she enters. “And it’s scary. Luckily, I haven’t had any altercations in the men’s room thus far. But they look at me like, ‘What is she doing here?’ It’s very awkward for them and it puts them in an awkward situation.”
