Amelie Mauresmo is to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The 2006 Australian Open and Wimbledon winning Frenchwoman, who spent 39 weeks as world No.1, now coaches one of the world’s top players, Andy Murray. Mauresmo came out as lesbian when she was 19, after making the final of the Australian Open in 1999, success she attributed to coming to terms with her sexuality and finding love. She faced jibes about her sexuality and physique throughout her career. "I'm honoured and humbled to be selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame," she says in a statement. "Tennis has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I extend my gratitude to the selection committee for recognising my career in this way. It’s an extraordinary honour to have my career celebrated alongside the greatest champions of our sport, people who I have admired so greatly all my life" Mauresmo will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July in Newport, Rhode Island.
