Netflix will be launched in New Zealand on 24 March. While it offers a wide range of movies and TV shows, Netflix is also known for its original programming; most notably Orange is the New Black which features lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters. Its US catalogue has an extensive cache of lgbti interest content. While a wide selection of movies is expected, it’s unlikely shows which have already screened in New Zealand such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards will be available, as their New Zealand rights are held elsewhere. New Netflix TV shows will be available though, as they are released. Among the confirmed new shows coming to the New Zealand line-up is Netflix original Grace and Frankie, which stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as two foes whose lives are altered dramatically when their husbands fall in love with each other. “Many Aussies and Kiwis have heard a lot about Netflix over the years, and we’re excited they’ll get to experience our unique blend of Netflix original content, local series and films, and popular movies and TV shows from around the world, all for a low monthly price,” says Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and chief executive officer. Netflix will be available on smart televisions manufactured by Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Philips and HiSense, and Fetch TV’s second-generation set-top box, as well as via game consoles, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Apple and Android tablets and smartphones. Details on monthly pricing will be available when it launches. We’ve asked for details on what lgbti content will be available.
