UPDATED: A protestor suffered a suspected broken arm at tonight’s Auckland Pride Parade. Three people made their way past barriers and onto the parade route, to protest the participation of Corrections, standing in front of a police motorbike and holding up a banner reading 'no pride in prisons', protesting the housing of trans prisoners in New Zealand jails, and their safety behind bars. They were also unhappy police were marching in the parade. The protestors resisted being moved away by security, and police say one person was injured while being removed from the parade route by security staff. After being brought back through the barriers, that protestor, a trans woman, was handcuffed on the ground by police. She was initially treated at the scene by ambulance staff before being taken to hospital. There is some concern about how long it took for the woman to receive medical treatment. Two other protestors were arrested for disorderly behaviour. *Our story initially referred to the injured protestor as 'they', until we were able to confirm their gender identity. Our story has since been changed. Anyone involved in the protest, or their friends, is welcome to contact us via news@gaynz.com - we will be following up on what happened with police and parade organisers today.
