Many hands make community wardrobe

Sat 14 Feb 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News

RainbowYOUTH is throwing open the closet doors today in an initiative where gender diverse and queer young people can access clothing which affirms their identity – free. Organiser Aych McArdle says the Community Wardrobe was kickstarted by generous donations from Westlake Girls High School, who ran a clothing drive at the end of last year. Lots of volunteers have since helped build the wardrobe, paint and sort clothing. "We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of volunteers who have helped make this dream possible,” McArdle says. “Often both money and stigma are barriers to accessing identity affirming clothing for our young people. We wanted to create a safe space where our rangatahi could get what they need and for it to be a really positive experience." RainbowYOUTH will accept donations of quality clothing, shoes, accessories and chest garments, such as binders and bras, after the Auckland Pride Festival. However it has more than enough for the wardrobe launch. The wardrobe is open from 1pm - 4.30pm, at 281 K’ Road, today.
