New Queen of Akl Pride to be annointed

Sun 25 Jan 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

Family Bar is hosting the event on Fridays during Auckland Pride Festival. The hunt is on for an up-an-coming queen who will become the drag face of the 2016 Auckland Pride Festival. K’ Rd’s Family Bar is hosting Miss Drag Pride throughout February, with the first heat on Friday 6 February, and the final on 27 February. One of Miss Drag Pride’s organisers, established queen Trinity Ice, says this time they are looking for an advocate and creative force for the 2016 Auckland Pride Parade. “Someone who can help with ideas and thoughts for Pride next year. Someone with flair, who is obviously creative in drag, but can take that experience to Pride next year.” The winner also nabs a trip to Hawaii. The competitors are already locked in and raring to go in a competition which follows hot on the heels of November’s closely-fought Princess to Queen, which was won by the multi-talented Carmen Dioxide. “Lots of new queens came out during that event,” Trinity Ice says. “And giving them the exposure and limelight to show their talent is what we’re after.” She believes people are increasingly confident in giving drag a go. “They see the older girls and the new girls and think ‘if she can do it, I can do it’ ... it’s a ripple effect. People like Kita Mean influence a lot of people.” Princess to Queen also set a high standard and Trinity Ice says the Miss Drag Pride competitors are going all out. “It opened a lot of floodgates for creativity.” She is looking forward to Auckland Pride Festival, and says she can’t wait to get amongst it. “Get ready, it’s another level this time around,” Trinity Ice says of Pride. “Get ready to be blown off the radar.”
