The decision by a Miami-Dade judge was made against a background of the US Supreme Court meeting to decide whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry or if the matter can be left to the discretion of individual states. Thirty six of the USA's 50 states plus the District of Columbia now allow same-sex marriage.
