Staircase plaque sells on Trade Me

Mon 5 Jan 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A piece of New Zealand’s gay history has been snapped up at auction. The original entrance plaque from Staircase was bought for $150 on Trade Me last night. The legendary Auckland gay club spanned three decades and three homes, on Fort St, Albert St and finally K’ Rd. “Staircase would come to be regarded as one of Auckland’s most iconic gay clubs, and was the home of influential Pacific drag divas Bertha, Buckwheat, Tess Tickle and the late Bust-O,” writes David Herkt in Queen City: A Secret History of Auckland. A popular Staircase Reunion was held on K’ Rd last February as part of Auckland Pride Festival, which is set to be followed up by a Staircase Revival this February. Did you buy the plaque? We’d love to know what your plans for it are! Email news@gaynz.com
