Slam poets coming to Akl Pride Festival

Sun 21 Dec 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

A special one-off slam poetry night at Auckland Pride Festival will focus on lgbt themes. The Rising Voices Summer Series will showcase a range of spoken word performers as part of Auckland Fringe in mid-February. The Friday 13 February show will have a special Auckland Pride Festival line-up. Organisers say the Rising Voices Summer Series will showcase New Zealand’s “most electric, hilarious and passionate slam poets” looking at what it means to be an Aucklander today. Performances have no rules, and can include dance, theatre, music, movement and video. “Our hope is that the poets will really be able to show who they are without the normal rules of Slam Poetry applying,” says Co-Founder of Rising Voices, Grace Taylor. “I’m really excited to see how far they push themselves and what might emerge in the wake”. The event stems from the Rising Voices Youth Poetry Slam, which began in 2011. Tickets go on sale tomorrow here
