'Benjy the gay bull' off to sanctuary

Sun 14 Dec 2014 In: International News View at Wayback

Benjy 'the gay bull' will arrive at his new home in an animal sanctuary this weekend. People from all over the world helped save the bull who loves bulls. A farmer in County Mayo in Ireland’s west had decided to fatten the animal up and send him to the slaughterhouse, because he’d shown more interest in other male bulls than any of the cows. The plight of “Benjy the gay bull” led to a #SaveBenjy hashtag and fundraising campaign which raised £9,401 being raised in four weeks. Those who donated for the campaign ranged from £5,000 from Simpsons Co-Creator Sam Simon, to an unemployed man who donated his last £5 to help, because he was so upset by the story. Benjy is now being rehomed at the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in the UK. “We would like to say a huge thank you to all 321 supporters who donated what they could afford to help save Benjy and have him transported here to the UK,” says Graham Davies, Co-Founder TheGayUK, which led the campaign to save him. “A recent survey showed 44 per cent of young LGBT people had considered suicide, which is just sickening. No one, man or beast, should feel unwanted, ashamed, threatened or bullied because of their sexuality,” he adds. TheGayUK says homosexuality in nature is widely observed. “In fact same-sex attraction is noted in over 1,500 species with the ‘gayest’ being the fruit bat where 30 per cent have same-sex attraction.”
