Garth McVicar leaving Conservative Party

Fri 28 Nov 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Garth McVicar The man who thinks same-sex marriage will increase the crime rate is leaving the Conservative Party to be reinstated as head of the Sensible Sentencing Trust. Tough justice campaigner Garth McVicar stood in the Napier electorate at the election, splitting the right vote in favour of Labour’s Stuart Nash, who claimed the seat. He has claimed more than once, without any evidence, that same-sex marriage will increase the crime rate. He says he is “gathering evidence” and time will prove him right. The Conservative Party, which is led and chiefly funded by anti-gay businessman Colin Craig, failed to gain enough party vote to make it into Parliament. McVicar founded the Sensible Sentencing Trust, and he’s told the Dominion Post he will now leave the Conservative Party and return to it, with current head Ruth Money stepping down. When McVicar first made the link between marriage equality and the crime rate the Sensible Sentencing Trust distanced itself, saying it was his personal view.
