Sam Brooks is a finalist in the Outstanding New Playwright category of Wellington's Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards for his play Riding In Cars With (Mostly Straight) Boys. Actor Callum Gittens has also been nominated for Supporting Actor of the Year for his multiple roles in the play. Riding in Cars with (Mostly Straight) Boys is set outside Riding in Cars with (Mostly Straight) Boys is set in a car and performed outside in a carpark. It premiered in a carpark behind Te Papa at Wellington Fringe this year, before moving to The Basement carpark in Auckland during Auckland Pride Festival. The play centres on a young gay man Kyle (played by Dan Veint) who keeps falling for his apparently unattainable straight friends, all played by Gittens. Brooks was recently named Auckland's most exciting playwright by Metro magazine. Sexuality is a common thread in his works, which include Queen and Another Dead Fag. The winners of the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards will be announced on Sunday 14 December at Paramount Theatre.
