Rainbow Panel for Akl Council in the works

Tue 18 Nov 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

Len Brown at this year's Big Gay Out Auckland Council buffer group the Rainbow Door is making progress on suggestions the Council have a Rainbow Demographic Advisory Panel. Mayor Len Brown proposed the idea at the Big Gay Out in February. The Rainbow Door, which is made up elected Auckland Council members, Council staff and community organisations, has since fleshed out a clear proposal. “The main driver from the Rainbow Door perspective is to have a visible voice within the existing council structure,” the group says. “The Rainbow Panel would advise council on rainbow business creating their own work programme across council work streams. The panel would be appointed by an independent group.” Once the proposal is endorsed by the Rainbow Door, it will be reported to the Community Development and Safety Committee for approval. Setting up the panel could take up to six months and would ultimately need to be adopted by the Council’s governing body. Anyone who would like to have input should email annette.smithard@aucklandcouncil.govt.
