GALS marking 22 years with A Night Out

Tue 11 Nov 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

GALS' upcoming 22nd anniversary concert A Night Out will include everything from Petula Clark to Pharrell Williams and The Nutcracker. The non-auditioned lgbti Auckland choir has members of all ages and from all walks of life. For their 22nd birthday on 22 November at Freemans Bay Community Hall, they will take on some slightly more challenging numbers with their unique GALS twist. They have prepared and shaped a concert which combines choral aspects with that of a fine production performance. The production team has been busy hunting for props everywhere to work with the songs they have selected, which include tracks from Petula Clark, the Beatles, Pharrell Williams, Mama Cass, Boyz II Men, Motown, Fats Waller, ABBA and a number of movies and musicals – plus its version of The Nutcracker. “Being a choir, we couldn’t resist taking you on a trip to the Italian Opera, but… it’s not just any old opera,” GALS adds. “This wonderful parody, will have you in stitches (if you know opera), however, the florid 'recitativo' will have Kiri Te Kanawa eating her heart out. We can guarantee that you will not hear this song on any opera production stage.” There will also be a performance by Same Sex Salsa.
