Transgender Day of Remembrance services will be held in Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch this week, to mourn the deaths of 226 transgender victims of violence around the world in the past year. The event has been held around the world each year on 20 November, since 1999. It’s designed to raise public awareness of hate crimes against trans people, provide a space for public mourning and honour the lives of those trans people who might otherwise be forgotten. The latest figures from Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring project list 226 reported killings of trans people from October 1st 2013 to September 30th 2014. The update shows reports of murdered trans people in 28 countries in the last 12 months, with the majority of 113 from Brazil. GenderBridge is hosting a Transgender Day of Remembrance service at Auckland’s St Mathew-in-the-city on Thursday 20 November, from 7PM. All are welcome to attend. Agender has issued an open invitation for a Trans Day of Remembrance service on Thursday at 8PM. It’s being held at one of Christchurch’s gardens of tranquillity, on the corner of Manchester St and Cambridge Terrace. All are welcome to attend the service, and to have coffee at Beat Café afterwards. Hamilton Pride is hosting a gathering at the city’s Riff Raff Statue, on Victoria St, on Sunday 23 November at 7PM.
