Sloane farewelled after sudden death

Fr Philip Billing officiated at the funeral Hamilton gay venue owner Gavin Sloane was this afternoon remembered as a loving and social man who was considering selling the business he created and planning a new direction for his life. Sloane died suddenly of a heart attack last Saturday evening, he was not known to have had a heart condition before his death, aged 67. At a moving service in the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary family and friends, many from the gay community of Hamilton, and from further afield including Australia, praised his qualities of generosity and hospitality. "He was a fastidious man," noted Mark Kennedy, once a Wellington gay nightclub owner and now resident in Queensland. "He made GuyZ a real social centre and brought together a group of beautiful people to share his passions." Sloane was privately cremated after the service. A notice on the door of GuyZ indicates it will re-open on October 30th.
