Supermarket apologises to lesbian couple

Tue 14 Oct 2014 In: International News View at Wayback

A supermarket in the popular UK gay destination of Brighton has apologised to a lesbian couple who say they were asked to cut the affection, or leave, over a peck on the cheek. Sussex University student Annabelle Paige says a shopper complained she was "worried for the safety of her child" after witnessing her lightly kiss her girlfriend at the Sainsbury’s. She says a security guard told them to either shop without being affectionate, or leave the store. "To be honest, I thought she was joking," Paige told The Times. "I’m so shocked and upset about it. I was absolutely humiliated." Sainsbury’s has since apologised, saying "It is clear that Miss Paige and her partner were not behaving inappropriately and we are very sorry that they were treated in this way.” It says it will make a donation to the charity of her choice. The security guard, who is herself gay, has also apologised.
