Heckled couple gets second ceremony

Tue 14 Oct 2014 In: International News View at Wayback

A large, classy wedding party has been thrown for a gay couple whose nuptials were interrupted by abusive, homophobic shouting. Arizona men Oscar De Las Salas and Gary Jackson say a heckler who shouted “go home homos” and “go home faggots” as they married in a California park took away a moment of joy. “That person took a chunk of what should have been a beautiful day and turned it into something nasty and full of hate,” De Las Salas has said of their Coronado Park wedding. After the abuse was revealed the men were inundated with support and a Coronado woman said she wanted to make up for it by throwing them a second wedding party. They had the ‘celebration of love’ over the weekend at a local resort. Kristina Lee Photography "It was humbling and emotional for us to get the meet so many of the people of Coronado, and hear their individual stories of how this incident in the park on that first wedding day and the response from the community had touched them on a personal level," Jackson has told The Advocate. "We had no idea the impact that this had on so many people across their community - and we were sincerely touched."
