Norman and Craig settle 'closet' dispute

Fri 10 Oct 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

The dispute over Green Party co-leader Russel Norman's assertion that Colin Craig thinks "gays belong in the closet" has been settled out of court. A joint statement from the two men says they "have agreed to resolve their dispute". In February Dr Norman told the estimated 15,000-strong glbti crowd the Conservative Party leader believes "a woman's place is in the kitchen and a gay man's place is in the closet." Today's statement says "both accept that the comments were made on a political occasion, but they disagree about what the comments were understood to mean. Neither party considers there is value in continuing with the dispute in the courts." There are to be no damages, as Craig never sought them, and both parties have agreed to bear their own costs. Craig, who failed to get his Conservative Party into Parliament at the Election, has stood by and often expanded on his belief that gay people are abnormal.
