Queen rescues princess in new book

Fri 10 Oct 2014 In: International News View at NDHA

Celebrated fantasy writer Neil Gaiman’s latest children's book features a princess being woken up by a kiss from a queen. The Sleeper and the Spindle is described as a dark twist on classic fairtytales. Illustration by Chris Riddell. It follows the adventures of a young queen who, on the eve of her wedding, sets out to rescue a princess in a neighbouring kingdom from a spell that has caused her to fall into a deep sleep. Publisher Bloomsbury has told Gay Star News that “while it is not a gay story in itself there is much to be said about having a female kiss not only described but illustrated in a book for young readers.” The book is illustrated by Chris Riddell. Gaiman’s previous works include American Gods, Stardust and Coraline. He is married to bisexual musician Amanda Palmer. The Sleeper and the Spindle will be released on October 23.
