Coming soon: PattyBoy's Introspective Illusions

Wed 24 Sep 2014 In: Music View at Wayback View at NDHA

Cover design by Coby Zutt Art – he and PattyBoy are both fans of each other’s work. New Zealand pop artist PattyBoy will release his EP next week. Introspective Illusions references Alice in Wonderland, a story he says resembles his state of mind when he performs, whether on stage or in music videos. The Aucklander has gained a following through YouTube, where recent highlights include his Mika parody Douche to Impress. The new EP includes six web released singles and a five track EP. Unicorn (see the video below) has previously made it into the Top 30 Pop Songs on NZ iTunes. New tracks are Rabbit Hole, Invade, Reality Show, Exposure and R.T.D. (feat. Tenani). The performer describes Introspective Illusions as “a musical journey down the Rabbit Hole into an artist’s mind, as told by ‘rebellious pop music’.” “To me, the title of this EP Introspective Illusions represents my creative process and self-examination I deal with when writing music. The need to go back over past experiences over and over again good or bad, light or dark to retell them as my own new stories. Putting an illusion over them by releasing the past into the world as a song to move on so I can be free at last,” he says. “Introspective Illusions references Alice in Wonderland because I grew up with the Disney version being one of my favourite movies, only to re-watch is as an adult and see it in a completely different way. The sweet children’s movie is actually quite a chaotic experience to me now and closely resembles the state of mind I enter when I perform on stage or who I am in my music videos. The stories I tell in songs are real, yet has some kind of fantasy illusion over that can’t been seen, some kind of greater force controlling me. Music is strong!” PattyBoy says the entire EP flows through as a whole piece, with each song fading into the next perfectly so there are no gaps. “I wanted to create it this way because the stories I tell all make up a whole state of being from start to finish and the listening of this EP is an experience. Even now I still listen to the EP almost every night in bed with the lights out. It takes me to another world, Wonderland!” The EP is out on iTunes on 1 October, but can be pre-ordered here. A release party will be held at Poof on Friday 3 October, with Wonderland dress-up encouraged. PattyBoy will perform all the tracks on the EP.
