Julia Gillard changes tune on marriage

Tue 23 Sep 2014 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Julia Gillard Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has declared marriage equality is “inevitable” after inflexibly opposing it while in office. The revelation came in an interview she did with Channel Nine ahead of the release of a memoir about being Australia’s leader. As prime minister she opposed same-sex marriage and maintained she believed in the "traditional" definition of the union. She told Channel Nine she now accepted things would change. "I accept the course of human history now is that we are going to see same-sex marriage here and in, you know, most parts of the developed world." Australian Marriage Equality national director Rodney Croome is urging Labor MPs who continue to be conflicted about marriage equality to consider Gillard's comments and ensure they are on the right side of history when marriage equality is next voted on. "Equality and choice are two key feminist principles which Ms Gillard lost sight of by opposing marriage equality and hopefully they are now coming back in to focus."
