Gay Labour MP Grant Robertson says he "can’t deny" interest in being Labour’s leader. David Cunliffe has made it clear he wants to remain in charge, despite Labour’s lowly party vote of just under 25 per cent. “It’s clearly a very, very disappointing result from the point of view of the Labour Party,” Robertson has told Radio New Zealand this morning. “There’s a lot to take in from the election campaign and that’s what I believe the party should be doing over the next days and weeks.” Robertson said a lot of New Zealanders who associate with Labour values like fairness and equality don’t see Labour as a party they want to vote for at the moment, and “a thorough relook” and listening is needed. “I believe Labour can and should be the government again, but we’ll only get there if we take the time to reflect now on what’s gone wrong.” Robertson says he has previously put his hand up to be leader and has always said that one day it’s a job he would like. “I can’t deny my interest in the job.” Former leader David Shearer has also left the door open for a possible leadership bid. A leadership team of Grant Robertson and Jacinda Ardern is a popular suggestion on social media. Listen to the interview here
