More charges likely for lodge owner

Tue 16 Sep 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The Mainstreet Lodge in Kaitaia Police have 16 officers working on the investigation into a Kaitaia lodge owner who is accused of drugging and indecently assaulting male tourists. Michael Harris appeared in court last week on 39 charges including, including ‘making of intimate visual recordings’ and indecent assault. The charges relate to 16 men, mostly overseas tourists, aged between 18 and 25, who had stayed at Harris’ Mainstreet Lodge in Kaitaia. Police say they have received a “significant” number of phone calls and emails since they first publicised the investigation last week. More than 30 people have made contact. Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston says officers are working on contacting and interviewing those who have come forward. He says staff from the Police electronic crime lab in Auckland are going through material that has been seized. “The process of identifying potential victims and linking these to the information we have obtained is ongoing, and likely to take some time. However, we encourage anyone that may have information that could be relevant to please come forward.” Mr Johnston says further charges are likely at Harris’ next court appearance on Thursday.
