McVicar splitting the right vote in Napier

Sun 14 Sep 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Garth McVicar The Conservative Party’s ‘gay marriage will increase crime’ candidate appears to be splitting the vote in Napier, in favour of Labour’s candidate. A One News-Colmar Brunton poll out last night has Labour’s Stuart Nash in front in the electorate, on 39 per cent. Labour has not held the seat since 2005. With incumbent Chris Tremain stepping down, National’s hoped replacement Wayne Walford is on 33 per cent, while the Conservatives’ Garth McVicar is on 22 per cent. McVicar has a high profile in the area, as the founder of the Sensible Sentencing Trust. He believes marriage equality will increase the crime rate, and says he is collecting evidence to prove he is right.
