Man of the moment Sam Smith is coming to New Zealand for a show at Vector Arena on Thursday 23 April. The soulful singer’s striking voice helped him leap to stardom with hit track Money on my Mind. He’s since released acclaimed debut album In The Lonely Hour, which is currently number one of the New Zealand album chart. In May the 22-year-old revealed many of the songs on the album were about unrequited love for a man he fell for last year. “He didn't love me back. I think I'm over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn't felt love before.” Smith has since told Digital Spy he was worried about coming out because “equality is so far from where it should be,” but was pleasantly surprised by the reaction. “I didn’t give the public enough credit. We were really panicky about it, but then as soon as we did it, I am just so proud of how people haven’t reacted. People really just don’t give a shit.” He’s explained he’s not trying to be a gay spokesperson. “It sounds awful of me, but I’m really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That’s what I do. I’m not trying to heal the world. From a young age I’ve always been like this, so it’s been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I’m not going to stop that now.” Tickets go on sale from 15 September, with a pre-sale beginning on 10 September via Frontier Touring.
