Shaun Robinson is advising against comparing the two The New Zealand AIDS Foundation is warning against comparing Ebola and HIV, saying it’s misleading, and feeds into fear and misconceptions. It’s concerned about comparisons between the two in the media. “HIV is not highly contagious as Ebola appears to be,” NZAF Executive Director Shaun Robinson says. “You cannot catch HIV from saliva, from handshakes, kissing, sharing linen or plates and cutlery.” Robinson says the highest risk of contracting HIV in New Zealand is through sex without condoms. “HIV can also be contracted by blood to blood contact but simple protective measures in the case of an injury make this very rare. New Zealand has achieved one of the best records in the world at containing HIV/AIDS. It is not helpful to create fear by comparing it to Ebola.”
