Cliff Lyon, NZ First's Epsom candidate A New Zealand First candidate says Labour is a party for "gays, lesbians and the loony intelligent left". The NZ Herald reports that before his party leader made a speech in Epsom yesterday afternoon, local candidate Cliff Lyon claimed National were a party of bankers, "with a capital B" and Labour have lost touch with their working class roots. "If you have a look at their supporters they are really gays, lesbians, the unemployed who they throw heaps of money at, and what I might call the loony intelligent left who sit up in Auckland University." Lyon is a former lawyer, grandfather of eight and "solid Grey Power member". A straw poll on GayNZ.com’s home page currently has Labour ahead of the Greens by a smidgen in the party vote stakes, while New Zealand First have five per cent support. New Zealand First bloc-voted against the marriage equality legislation, despite some of its MPs being in favour, because its leader wanted a referendum.
