'Excited' Mr Gay NZ off to compete in Rome

Fri 22 Aug 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Mr Gay New Zealand Troy Williams Mr Gay New Zealand, Troy Williams, flies out of the country today, excited and ready to challenge competitors from around the world for the Mr Gay World title. Williams, a medical student, is clearly looking forward to the competition which has drawn 32 hot and interesting gay men from around the globe to the Rome finals. "I'm pretty excited to get over there," he says, adding that he's also looking forward to arriving in the middle of an Italian summer after a nasty patch of wintery weather here at home. Preparations for the various challenges which lead up to the judging of the winner have included deciding what to wear in the national costume section, with traditional Maori attire and All Black kit believed to have been on his list of possibilities. But Williams is staying mum about his final choice. The event gets under way early Monday morning New Zealand time with welcoming formalities and a cocktail event. Before the pageant finale on Sunday morning New Zealand time the contestants will tour Rome's historical attractions, rehearse their presentations and take part in photographic modelling, sports, and other challenges. The organisers are running an online poll for public voting on who should be the winner and it appears any person can vote once per day for the man of their choice. The winners of the Mr Gay World title for the last two years have been Mr Gay New Zealand title holders. Andreas Derleth won in 2012 and Chris Olwage took the title last year.
