Uganda criminalises HIV transmission

Wed 20 Aug 2014 In: International News

Uganda President Yoweri Museveni President President Yoweri Museveni has signed a bill which introduces fines and prison sentences for the transmission of HIV in Uganda. Buzzfeed says the law imposes a fine and a ten-year prison sentence for “intentional transmission of HIV” and five years for “attempted transmission of HIV.” The legislation also allows for some compulsory testing and would enable courts to order the release of individuals’ HIV status without consent. It comes just after Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act was wiped from the law.
