Barclay with his fellow medal winners New Zealander Don Barclay has continued his fine sporting form, winning gold in the 60-64 age group shot put while competing in his eighth Gay Games. He’s finished ahead of Rick Thoman from the USA and Dieter Franz Seifert from Germany at the Cleveland Gay Games. Barclay says the track and field events are being held at the Lee Jackson Field, University of Akron, approximately 45 minutes south off Cleveland. “The track and field programme is being well run as has been the case for many of the sports events,” he says. “Despite its reputation, Cleveland has proven to be an excellent host city with the locals being exceedingly friendly. The Opening Ceremony was a very memorable experience, a slick and well run event.” Barclay’s Cleveland gold follows gold medals in the shot put and discus at the 2010 Cologne Gay Games, which he came back from a broken wrist to compete in. His first Gay Games was Vancouver in 1990 where he won the first of his gold medals in badminton. He switched to discus in Chicago in 2006 and has since moved on to shot put.
