RainbowYOUTH is looking for people who can offer feedback about its education workshops, and help make them more accessible for South Auckland students. The Auckland-based education and advocacy organisation has received support from the Maori Mental Health and Addictions Network at Counties Manukau District Health Board, Te Ara Whiriwhiri, to deliver its education programmes to schools in the area. The organisation’s General Manager Duncan Matthews says he’s really excited by the opportunity Te Ara Whiriwhiri has given RainbowYOUTH, to create in-school workshops, professional development courses and resources on sexuality and gender identity in South Auckland. “On top of this we are also able to deliver all these for free through to mid-2015.” RainbowYOUTH is kicking things off by gathering an advisory board to help it ensure the programme is culturally relevant. This will be done through three workshops. The group says to take part you “don’t need to be an expert in education or top of your class” and it wants people from all walks of life with all kinds of skill sets. It wants to start offering its education programme to Counties Manukau schools by the start of term 4. Education Director Aych McArdle is excited to be part of the collaborative community project. “I’m looking forward to working with our youth advisory panel and community leaders to develop an education model that meets the specific needs of our students in South Auckland schools.” Find out more here
