Party claims McVicar has "common sense"

Mon 11 Aug 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Garth McVicar says he doesn't have a problem with gay people, but if they get married it will increase crime. The Conservative Party claims its candidate who believes marriage equality will lead to crime stands for “common sense”, among other things. Sensible Sentencing Trust founder Garth McVicar is standing in the Napier electorate, for the party run by anti-gay property developer Colin Craig. A press release announcing his Napier tilt describes McVicar as “straight talking,” “with the courage to stand up for decent kiwis” and having “common sense, decency, and family values”. McVicar claims, without any evidence whatsoever, that same-sex marriage will increase the crime rate. He says he is “gathering evidence” and time will prove him right. However he says he has nothing against gay people, telling Radio New Zealand’s Wallace Chapman “my brother’s a gay” and “a lot of my friends are. That’s absolutely fine.”
