Gay United Future candidate Damien Light has been ranked third on the party list, behind only the party’s Leader and President. Light is standing in the Northcote electorate. The KiwiRail line manager was 12th on the party list at the last election. He told us at the time he was drawn to United Future by Dunne's 'common-sense' approach and what he sees as fair and well-considered policies, which balance financial sense and social responsibility. Light is pro same-sex adoption and believes all the recommendations of the Transgender Inquiry should be implemented. United Future leader Peter Dunne has said in the past that sexuality is a “non-issue” and not something he asks candidates about. Heading into the election, he says the party “stands for fairness and choice” and “the diversity of communities, and the rights of all New Zealanders to enjoy the unique aspects of the New Zealand lifestyle.” He continues: “The candidates on this list reflect those attributes and I am confident all can make a strong and effective contribution to New Zealand and its future. United Future has been consistently glbti-friendly since it split with anti-gay evangelical members like Gordon Copeland.
