Same-sex civil unions in stark decline

File Photo There were 202 same-sex marriages in the June quarter, 39 of which were transfers from civil unions. Of those, 81 were couples from overseas. There were just eight same-sex civil unions in the quarter - with numbers tumbling since marriage equality came into effect last August. There were 23 in September quarter, seven in the December quarter and six in the March quarter - a total of 44. In comparison there were 870 same-sex marriages between 19 August and the end of June. The peak was in the March quarter, which covered the popular summer wedding period.
