Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has described the deaths of a substantial number people from the HIV/AIDS field in the MH17 tragedy as a “devastating loss”. The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, who was Minister of Health in the early stages of New Zealand's HIV epidemic, is herself en route to the AIDS2014 conference in Melbourne, where many of those on the downed flight were headed. “Any of us could have been on that fateful flight. So tragic,” Clark has tweeted: Green MP and former New Zealand AIDS Foundation researcher and Executive Director Kevin Hague has tweeted he is “quite stressed” waiting to hear who the other HIV activists and researchers were who died on the downed flight. “Likely I know some of them,” he says.
