Ponsonby bar's name pops back to 'Poof'

Wed 16 Jul 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

An Auckland bar has changed its name back to Poof, after overwhelming feedback in favour of the move. The Ponsonby Rd venue was briefly renamed the gentler POP, a shortening of "Poof on Ponsonby", after complaints about the word ‘poof’ being derogatory. Murmurings about this led to a call for feedback, with drag hostess Miss Ribena’s Facebook post asking for feedback flooded with comments in favour of the name Poof. The venue is owned by Wayne Clark, the long-time owner of Family, who chose the name Poof to go with the bar’s 50s and 60s style comic book décor. “It's a quirky name which is good for Ponsonby Rd and it's a little bit cheeky for these days when society is more liberal and we gays are more accepted,” he told GayNZ.com Daily News.
