My Kitchen Rules couple Carly and Tresne have married in New Zealand, and say it’s “unbelievably shitty” they can’t get married in Australia. While they were described as best friends and housemates on the current season of the Australian reality cooking show, they revealed in a women’s magazine they were actually a couple. The pair had a commitment ceremony in March 2012, but went a step further with a marriage on Waiheke Island earlier this month. “You want it to feel real but you know it’s not. It’s like someone’s telling you you can’t feel a certain way. It’s so unbelievably shitty we can’t get officially married in our own country. It’s a real downer,” Tresne has told Woman’s Day. “But today it’s only about us – no drama and no distractions. The way it should be.” The couple has shared this image on their Facebook page with the update: Officially married! #nzlegallymarried #lovenz The women have changed their last name to Hart, a derivative of the word heart, as they both have family who don’t support them. “Heart is the one thing that’s constant in our lives,” Tresne told Woman’s Day. An Internal Affairs worker has revealed he worked late on a Friday night to make sure the couple had the paperwork for their wedding. Carl Nordstrand has told the NZ Herald he was willing to stay three hours after the end of his shift to help the couple with their marriage certificate, which was lodged in Australia, but was only fixed when they arrived in person – straight from the airport. “They thanked me profusely. They were a very, very appreciative couple and got married the next day.” Meanwhile, a new poll has been released across the Tasman showing a record 72 per cent support for marriage equality.
