Members of the British Dance Council are considering limiting the definition of a couple for professional and amateur dance competitions to be only "one man and one lady." The proposed change is coming under fire from gay and straight dancers as same-sex couples have until now been able to compete and have featured prominently in televised competitions. The Telegraph reports that the dispute is "understood to have stemmed from a rise in the number of successful same-sex couples on the ballroom dancing scene," with some people complaining that male same-sex couples have an unfair disadvantage due to men being physically stronger than women. Long-time UK glbti rights campaigner Peter Tatchell says he believes any ban would be illegal and that the move "may be motivated by some judges, competitors and spectators not being comfortable with the participation of same-sex dance partners.”
