National MP denies being homophobic

Wed 9 Jul 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Jami-Lee Ross says he's not homophobic, and voted for marriage equality. National MP Jami-Lee Ross has denied a Labour MP’s claim he has made homophobic comments about New Zealand First MP Denis O’Rourke. O’Rourke was under the spotlight earlier this year over claims he was in a relationship with a man who lives on the same property, and who he employs. He denied they were a couple, said “we’re deliberately not partners”, and said he didn’t want to add anything more. Labour MP Clare Curran has since told a student magazine that National MP Jami-Lee Ross made homophobic comments about O'Rourke during a parliamentary debate. She won’t repeat the comment from Ross which she says left her "very upset." Ross has responded, telling Stuff "I'm not homophobic. I proudly stood and voted in favour of same-sex marriage and I don't share those views at all. I don't know what Clare is on about."
