The first openly-lesbian member of the Australian Senate, Penny Wong, will be the special guest speaker at this year’s Peter Fraser Memorial Lecture. The annual event is a fundraiser for Labour’s Wellington Central campaign, an electorate where gay MP Grant Robertson is standing once again. Penny Wong is the leader of the Labor Party in the Australian Senate. She is the former Minister of Finance, in Julia Gillard's cabinet, and was the first openly lesbian member of an Australian Cabinet. In 2005, she was selected as one of the 25 most influential lesbian Australians by readers of samesame.com.au. She and partner Sophie Allouache have a daughter Alexandra who was born in December 2011. The lecture will be held on Wednesday August 6 at the Hunter Lounge.
