Nancy Garden has died, aged 76 Nancy Garden, the author of pioneering lesbian novel Annie on My Mind, has died at her home in Massachusetts. Her wife Sandra Scott has told the New York Times Garden appears to have suffered a heart attack. Garden’s 1982 novel Annie on My Mind is credited with being one of the first young adult novels to portray a lesbian relationship – and have a happy ending. It’s about two New York high schoolers from different sides of the track who meet and fall in love. Critically-loved, it “was also burned, banned and destined to become the subject of a federal censorship case,” as the New York Times puts it. The novel has sold more than 100,000 copies and has never been out of print. Garden has also published dozens of other books. Nancy Garden was 76.
